Lightning Badge
03:45
|
|||
Pollute the well,
sit back in your electric chair
spellbound and wired, a bull at the gate.
Dead afternoon
time is a toothless, savage brute
it was Goliath and youth was your sling,
I want to see this world
I only get one swing
if I have to go without you, I'll go.
Ride in the ambulance with me
talk of an ancient dream
give me a lightning badge
the last one you have.
Tourniquet season
freezing and freezing
I've looked for a reason
for the storm's bright flash
how God won't answer back
tuck your knees in.
And watch how the potion overtakes me
every new vaccine helps me sleep
how does it feel when you discover
you've been replaced so easily
how do you wrap your head around it?
Your fingers snap
you watch the whole reel spinning back
this symbol drawn protects you from harm
and suddenly waking up each day doesn't sting
gaslit and warm, a child of the horn.
Dirty work for the crossroad spell
killing the Hangman there
the air still smells of ash
of blood on our hands.
From the burning cop car
smoke curls like sleeping dogs
I followed you in to the busy hotel bar
as the madness waved its wolves along
you, waving your arms, your wands.
Now that you notice it's unraveling
there is no time left to jump ship
how does it feel when you discover
nothing of any worth exists
move as if you were underwater
our lives like a block of wet cement
you and I standing in the middle
we wait for the serum to kick in.

Londres
03:07
|
|||
You could slam the phone, curse to some foreign god
but I won't budge from the booth in the lobby
a plate of thirds
and remains of a mirror decorate the hall.
All of the neighbors can hear
I'll be gone by the end of the year.
They have cornered you
backed you up against a wall
move to Spain and kick some dirt against the cage
under the "Fog Tree", eating grapes,
sitting Indian-style, listening to you talk awhile
"This life of mine, it's felt like three."
We see those Puerto Rican girls
throwing wreathes on your body
dying in your arms
choosing "heads" on the coin that is flipping.
Do what you promised you would do
I am glued to the seat in the waiting room.
At about a quarter to two
making wagers, dodging cops
you weren't you back then
and I? A human bruise,
black alley cat, cocaine white shoes.
Up to Londres, you ran forward, with Lourdes, hand in hand
speaking Spanish to the maitre'd, hoping he understands
it's a cruel parable, it's the fools they took us for
this life of mine, it's felt like three.

The Measuring Worm

An elevator ride, it's funny how I never thought
some day you and I are gonna have to drift apart
with the golden age now gone
I ain't laughing too hard on my way to the bank now
pack your things, we are going to see the Master.
If it hadn't been for my elementary way of thinking
we could have had more time, even through all the drinking
"fierce" is the word I'd use,
"fancy" is a term i never used to describe you,
you were off to see the Makers when the storm arrived.
An elevator ride, I'm not coming back down
the aura from the TV lights your inching path to the house
even moving slowly, oh you're transforming
both the needle and the thread
both the last gasp and first breath
it beat it out of me, the magic in my eyes
waiting for the footsteps, making progress by and by
I was trampled by the Masses while I held out for you.

The Lazarus Trick
03:22
|
|||
Imagine I'm a big man
holding up the heavens, raining on
this river of the rumors, mumbling and strong,
ten leagues along the coastline there is a house
battered by its histories, smashed to smithereens,
bind all the loose pieces, bind
in the bower we try
the Lazarus trick on us one more time.
Picture me in silk robes
reaping up the toils, one by one
in an orange peel, the sobbing fields of "Alacrán".
Tell me I'm a good one and everyone's wrong
tell me all the hammering was coming from my jaws
fall, as if from a tall tower
at the point of excess, when you hit the surface,
reach out, then collapse.
Envision the destruction
this is where its child came to bathe
mangled and dismembered lovers
finally filled with hate.
Document the loss like a ditch full of bones
chronicle the ravages in funereal prose.
Cleansed, with your lopped off fingers spread
turning saltpeter red
in the Lazarus pit, leave me here for dead.

Immram

I don't know which one of us is right
and I don't really care
there's no need to yell
but one day you'll be gone
and skin will fade
I'm in a dream, I must be dreaming
I am blind, lost in the kitchen
I wear a lot of crowns
makes sense keeping them around
it's like company on the day that you find out
there is no one, nobody else there
it's such a long race but I think I'm winning.
Spin another yarn and find a tune resting on your tongue
I will cause you harm
like Arab music, no beginning, no end.
Well maybe I ain't so ugly all the time
or so calloused when I'm high
it's so simple the idea
vanishing into a mirror
maybe one day I will finally understand
there was no one, no one quite like you
somewhere along the way, I guess I must have lost that.
I'm sorry I was never who you thought I was gonna be
but when you die, I will change
lightning strikes and leaves burnt stone behind
when we're together, we lose all control
we turned lead into gold
when I come back in August
We'll find all the things that haunt us
and hide in them like blankets fighting in the breeze
it's like you and I still dressed in costume, bleeding in the sink
it's such a long race, but at least we're winning.

Bastille Day
02:17
|
|||
After yesterday, there were no more frontiers
Bastille Day did something to you
and you would storm this damn prison every year,
over the phone, you made sense of it all
maybe being alone helped you see it clearly
all of your friends left while you lay in bed
"au revoir: you said, along with its ghost.
Goodbye, so long, lonesome storefront, you break my heart
if I had known before,
I shouldn't have gone
I should have been here
should've done my part.
There's a loophole somewhere
not all roads lead to Hell
there's a bend in my spoke, there's a hole in my new coat
one of these days, I'll be funny again
I'll have money and things will even out.

The Geometer Moth
03:29
|
|||
I take a look at my life and I see no big fence
I see no brick house, I see no chimney smoke
but what I lack in hope, I make up for in promise
I still have my woman and the comfort she provides
for a while there I couldn't feel my footsteps
can you see me in your new form?
This goddamn year nearly put me in the pavement
nearly swallowed me up whole
how long until no one's left to look after me?
Hell I've been growing too, one day I'll grow wings
and take that trip I figured I'd taken by now
if there's a god up there, he must be out pissin'
'cause he sure as hell can't be bothered to look down.
Still it feels right whenever I think of you
can you see us down below?
You painted symbols on your forehead to protect you
will it get easier?
It must get easier
I know it's hard to see that now from here.

Kingmaker/Right-Hand Man
06:36
|
|||
Every day is an uphill fight
I will struggle with you as long as you're alive
ancient secrets come to light
down the corridor, the last door on your right,
I am pulling down the high road
to Hell with rising from the rubble.
Houses built out of matches
scatter like ashes
nothing is everlasting
no point to any action
no point to any decree.
Even ants protect their queens
living in a hole, it's good being the king
how do you think I must feel
left to hold the scepter when you disappear
hey, I think you've been cheated
to Hell with looking for a meaning.
If death isn't freedom, tell me what is then,
reason, the strike of lightning
and living as if you died there
out where the floor was charred black.
What do you look like now
seven months ago we were just seeds in the soil
born from a mandrake root
fingers in the washbasin harvest my fruit
I look out into the endless jungle
from the highest point, everything's shaped the same
the more that I go in the more the lines blur
anything I do just leaves a bitter taste
anything I do just leaves the world unchanged
but I'll stand beside you still
even when the days ahead are frightening
I'll be your right-hand man despite it
into the white hot void.
I'll stand beside you still
even if it means we go down fighting
I'll be your right-hand man despite it
I'll be your right-hand man.

Grow Thin
03:01
|
|||
I cut my hair as you made your breakfast
I went to work as a form of silent protest
sunrise can't coat the dark corners of my room
the dreams is the same, only the details are different
but dreams don't mean anything
there's life in your skin
you're eating again
the things you have done aren't mine to admire
aren't mine to forgive
horses this gray never give too much chase
just say what you mean to say
just say what you need to conquer.
I sold the books that you let me borrow
I plagued everything and drank until my palms hurt
I won't die although Salome has asked for my head
forget what occurred last night, look to tomorrow
and be only loyal to me
you can't go to Hell if there isn't one there
the picture is wide, it sucked us both in
made you a new person
I'll never feel safe now, this life is a cage
it struck me as wild
that by tomorrow night I won't know you.

The Lightning Show
02:05
|
|||
When you see the door's unopened
find me nowhere near
lose your breath in silent fear
is it a fetch or frontier?
When you find me gone and the straw's being burned
you kneel and you sway, and you sweat through your shirt
tell the kids not to wait
a kind destroyer.
Come and find me through the cellar door
hear my hip bones groan like an old kitchen floor
sacrifice me in my sanctuary
I'll be a ghost
like a footstep leaving the forest
or a pledge of devotion.
Wait for me at the end of the chase
when the skulls shake, knees bent, buckled and braced,
a shade stumbles in
a once holy spirit.
Come and find me down at the old wooden ark
come and find me shuffling cards at the dock
come and find me down at the cafe at dawn,
come and find me.
